What have OpenAI and Microsoft been up to lately? What does this have to do with the AI industry? 🤔

Since 2019, OpenAI and Microsoft have been working closely together, with big investments and a shared goal to push the limits of AI tech.

In this edition, I’ll take you through their journey—from the initial handshake to the latest milestones and the challenges that they’ve had to weather

It all started with a bold move in July 2019 when Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI to help push the boundaries of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Together, they set out to solve some of the world's biggest problems, and things haven't slowed down since.

Their collaboration, so far, has led to some incredible milestones.

For instance, OpenAI now uses Microsoft’s Azure as its main platform for training and running AI models. This partnership has also made possible innovations like GPT-3 and the Codex model, which powers GitHub Copilot—helping developers write code faster and smarter.

In 2020, Microsoft made an exclusive move by licensing GPT-3, putting OpenAI's powerful model at the heart of many of its services, like enhancing Azure’s capabilities.

Then came 2021, when the Azure OpenAI Service was launched. This gave businesses access to OpenAI’s cutting-edge models, helping them integrate AI into their products and workflows, from creating content in MS Office tools to gaining smarter insights from data.

So, what’s been happening more recently?? 🤔

In January, this year, OpenAI took a significant step by urging the U.S. government to prioritise AI investment and regulation to stay ahead of global competitors, particularly China. This push highlighted the need for more resources like chips, data, and energy to ensure that the U.S. remains a leader in the AI space.

Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to ramp up its investment in AI infrastructure. The company announced plans to allocate $80 billion in fiscal 2025 to expand its data centre capabilities, which will further support the growing demand for AI services.

Adding a surprising twist, January 2025 also saw the unveiling of the AFEELA 1, an AI-powered electric vehicle developed in partnership with Sony, Honda, Microsoft, and Epic Games. This move marks a major crossover between AI technology and the automotive industry, highlighting the growing role of AI beyond traditional tech spaces.

To date, both companies continue to invest in each other, strengthening their partnership and pushing AI tech forward.

The future of computing is going to be defined by developments in AI. It’s going to reshape every industry and every part of our society

- Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft

As expected, there have been some significant challenges with this purrfect partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft, some of which include:

  • Microsoft’s exclusive licensing of GPT-3 drew criticism, as some believed it limited broader access to the technology, clashing with OpenAI's initial commitment to openness.

  • Integrating OpenAI's advanced models into Microsoft’s products has required extensive adaptation and optimisation to ensure seamless functionality and user experience.

  • And finally, developing these AI models has raised concerns about potential misuse and bias in AI outputs.

I think the OpenAI and Microsoft partnership is a powerful combination of innovation and resources. Despite the challenges, they’ve jointly significantly advanced AI tech as we know it.

Don’t you agree? 🤔
